I believe in the value of a quality public education and that every student deserves a safe place to learn, grow, and be inspired to dream and succeed without limits.
I believe that our schools serve students best when we are actively seeking to challenge and meet the needs of our diverse population. Diversity of thought, experience, socio-economic status, and racial/cultural background is a strength and should be celebrated.
I believe that finding diverse ways to help kids broaden their horizons, expand their sense of the possible, and connect their learning to real life experience is essential to a good education. Quality education is more than just a collection of facts and equations. It means critical thinking, applied learning, and having the tools to grow as human beings and citizens who make our world a better place.
Our students should be well prepared to pursue their dreams for their future, and they should have the tools to be informed citizens in our democratic society. Our community only truly succeeds when each student, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status, is given the opportunity to be welcomed into their classrooms, to thrive in school, to experience a wide range of opportunities, and be challenged to grow to their fullest potential.
This includes learning in classrooms that value critical thinking, freedom of expression, and which allow our kids to grapple with issues, experience, history, and their futures. To be clear, it absolutely does not mean banning books.
We need to provide the widest range of opportunities possible, starting in elementary school so our kids can truly connect with their education and grow in whatever direction they possibly can. This includes a wide range of experiences and opportunities: in music, career & technical education, the arts, science & engineering, sports, social sciences, or any combination of those.
We wisely invest our resources in connection with the tremendous volunteer spirit we have in our community to provide these experiences for students. We also need to provide support for students & families who may struggle with meeting traditional pick-up/drop-off schedules or other barriers to ensure that every student can participate.
As a school district community, it is critically important that we not only value each and every one of our students as individuals, but that we value their voices and those of their families. Parents send us their best – their kids – and they should be our strongest partners in the education of their children. We must also highly value the voices and expertise of our staff, from our quality teachers and administrators to the bus drivers, secretaries, cooks, and custodians who help us educate and nurture our students.
Our community is blessed with a solid support for education and a strong sense of volunteerism. Our school district should actively communicate and partner with individuals, businesses, and our local governments to maximize the opportunities for our students. Partnering around areas of mutual interest will benefit everyone!
Our society depends on strong public schools that not only provide students with a quality basic skill set, but which also challenge and inspire them to grow. Students should be able to think critically and effectively and be ready to participate as well-rounded citizens in the democratic experiment that is America, not just for themselves, but for our community, state, & country as a whole.
Our students are counting us! Are you ready to help us realize our vision for Kent Schools? Get updates, volunteer, or share why you're voting for John.
